560 of the top players in the 17u and 16u age groups representing states and regions from all over the United States converged on the USA Baseball complex in Cary NC.  Skills trials and games were held in front of the Team USA staff and scouts as well as over 50 college coaches.

45 players in each age group were notified that they made the 'short list' under consideration for the 8 open spots on the respective Team USA 40 man roster.

Andy Karlan of Larchmont, NY (Catcher, Mamaroneck HS) was named to this short list.

Karlan threw out 3 attempted base-stealers and caught/received/blocked well in his 9 innings behind the plate.  He also hit a long double to the left-centerfield wall in this wood bat event.

Andy works on his catching and hitting with Chris Vasami, a former star at Mamaroneck High School who played for Elon and with the Colorado Rockies organization. He works on speed and agility with Greg Vasami at Vasami Training in Mamaroneck.

Although Karlan lost out on the 1 open Catching position to a player from Nebraska he has been invited back to compete in the 2014 NTIS at the 17u level.

The 2013 USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS) consists of four separate age groups -- 17U, 16U, 14U and 11U.

There are 3 rounds of qualifying tryouts held locally, then regionally and at the national level (the NTIS) in Cary, NC.

The 17U and 16U NTIS events were held Aug. 22-25, 2013, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
