Nassau AA Finals PREVIEW

By Josh Choi, 05/31/19, 3:30PM EDT

As expected, the top 2 teams in the Nassau AA have made their ways through the Championship Round. The reigning Nassau AA Champions and the Nassau AA-1 Conference Champions — Massapequa — will take on the Nassau AA-2 Conference Champions, Port Washington. Both teams have successfully lived up to the hype throughout the season; now it all comes down to who becomes the “better” of the best.

(1) Port Washington (13-2)

Port Washington has improved much more this season compared to last season after being eliminated to Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK in the first round of playoffs. For Port Washington, this will be their first championship round appearance since 1969; that’s exactly half a century from now. Port Washington will be very motivated to play “their game” of baseball after overcoming such great obstacle that could not be done in many generations.

For Port Washington, their offensive display is surely on notice with the fact that three of their players are part of the Top 10 with the most home runs in Nassau County this season: Jackson Sattinger (6), Sean Meth (4), and Alex Chang (3). Some of Port Washington’s most outstanding performances in their series with Oceanside during the semifinals include Jackson Sattinger’s 3-4 with 2 home runs & 4 RBIs and Alex Chang’s 2-3 with a home run, a triple, and 3 RBIs. Look out for these 3 powerhouses, as they look on to lead the offense for Port Washington.

Alongside their offense, the one man the Vikings can definitely trust is none other than the BPM Nassau AA-2 MVP Alex Chang. Not only can Chang show off his great hitting abilities but also his pure dominance on the mound. In all of Chang’s 7 starts — both in the regular season and in the postseason — he has yet lost a start for Port Washington. As always, if Chang stays consistent throughout the finals, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he takes home a victory for Port Washington.

(2) Massapequa (13-2)

The reigning Nassau AA Champions and Nassau AA-1 Conference Champions currently has an 8-game winning streak. Without a doubt, Massapequa is one of the favorites to win the Nassau AA County Championship, attempting to make history again; their mission to three-peat puts the teams in the Nassau AA conferences on full notice.

All-around, Massapequa has a very complete lineup and has taken command each of their games. Massapequa may not have a few extreme powerhouses as Port Washington, but what still makes them special is that each player in their lineup can produce and contribute significantly with hits and driving in runs. Chris DeSousa, Nick Schwartz, and Dan Wolf have hit 3 home runs apiece so far in the 2019 run.

Watch for Massapequa’s dominant pitchers, Bobby Conlon and Derek Haag, who both have at least 5 wins in their 2019 season so far. Conlon earned a no decision in Game 1 of the semifinals, but has done enough to keep East Meadow from scoring more runs; the game later went into extra innings with Massapequa’s victory. In Game 2 of the semifinals, Derek Haag successfully got the win for Massapequa, helping them advance to the Championship Round once again.

The Nassau County Class AA Championship Round will start today (5/31), tomorrow (6/1), and — if Game 3 is forced — Monday (6/3) at SUNY Old Westbury.

The team that has not appeared in the County Championship Round for 50 years will face their biggest challenge this season, as they take on the team who will look to win their third consecutive championship. Both teams have made such great runs this season, proving that they should be in the Championship Round. Port Washington has many talents that can help go all the way for their team, but we believe experience could play a factor in this matchup. Massapequa should be able to win their third consecutive championship, but it will be tough against the hot Port Washington.

Massapequa beats Port Washington in 3.
