Southampton - Since the Hampton Whalers’ magical run in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League ended last summer, the pieces have slowly been falling into place for an encore performance, only this time five teams on the East End will take the field.

Hamptons Collegiate Baseball, whose squads will play in their own division of the ACBL in 2009, recently released their player list, consisting of 115 collegians who hail from more than 65 universities coast to coast, who will descend on the Hamptons.

“The quality of players reflects the credibility that we gained in our first season with the Hampton Whalers,” League organizer Rusty Leaver commented. “The fact that as a start-up team we made it to the championship game of the ACBL helped us immensely when we reached out to prestigious Division I teams.”

The player pool will allow for five 23-man rosters, and although the majority of players can be expected in town, some may not make the trip due to injury or poor academic performance. In those cases, the recruiting team of Dan Gallagher and Dave Walker will look to fill the roster spots on an individual basis. Once the list is finalized, players will be distributed to franchises in Westhampton, Southampton, Sag Harbor, Riverhead and the North Fork.

Notable among the signees are Tony Bernazard, who is the son of the former major leaguer and current Mets Vice President for Player Development with the same name, as well as Brendan Floyd, whose brother Gavin won 17 games for the Chicago White Sox last season. Jerrod Eigsti from Dallas Baptist University has two older brothers playing pro ball, including Jacob Eigsti, who is in the New York Mets’ farm system.

First pitch is scheduled for the first week in June.
