The Hot Stove League is a new baseball league on Long Island. This is a team that plays in the league this summer.
The Wantagh Hawks are a solid team of 11-year-olds reaching their prime. Led by the tireless efforts of Head Coach Ray Whitaker, the upstart group last year achieved an impressive winning record in the NJBL and enjoyed a place in their Fall District Finals. This year with the Wantagh community rallying around them, the players battled through tough games and reached the District Williamsport Championship with a thrilling, clutch brand of baseball.
The team’s strength lies in the players’ bonds and the close community which puts forth tremendous support to the program. Most of the team has been together for years and improves with each passing season. The trio of Ryan Whitaker, Ricky Russo, and Jake Boden keep the Hawks competitive in starting pitching. The speedy Nick O’Connor, the southpaw Chris Merro, and the reliable Timmy Migliaro add extra depth to the bullpen.
Defensively, the Hawks trust the durable Adam Kissinger behind the plate. With Matt McCartin and Ryan Whitaker keeping things solid at first base, Jake Boden’s arm makes things look easy at third. Ricky Russo and Timmy Migliaro at second along with sparkplug Nick O’Connor at shortstop make for a well made, capable infield. Connor Naus patrols center field while Chris Merro, Tommy Tariche and Peter Daly play hard in the corners. These outfielders lay out the leather and consistently haul in fly balls.
With their bats, the team stays competitive and continues to build on a great start to a promising season.
